The Ingenious Boy Who Baffled the Wise

Cao Chong was a child prodigy who lived in ancient China during the Han Dynasty. He was the son of Cao Cao, a famous general and warlord. Cao Chong was known for his intelligence and wisdom, even at a young age. One day, the emperor asked Cao Cao to weigh a large elephant. Cao Cao was puzzled, as he did not have a scale large enough to weigh the elephant. Cao Chong came up with an ingenious solution, and he was able to weigh the elephant using only a boat and a set of rocks.

The story of Cao Chong Weighing the Elephant is a classic tale of intelligence and problem-solving. It is a story that has been told and retold for centuries, and it continues to inspire people of all ages. The story teaches us that we can achieve anything if we put our minds to it. We may not always have the resources we need, but we can always find a way to get the job done.

The Puzzle of the Elephant

The emperor was a large man with a booming voice. He had a long white beard and a kind face. He was also very wise and just. One day, the emperor decided to test the intelligence of his generals. He sent each of them a message, asking them to come to the palace the next day and bring with them a gift that was both unique and valuable.

Cao Cao was one of the generals who received the emperor's message. He thought long and hard about what gift he could bring that would be both unique and valuable. Finally, he decided to bring a large elephant. He knew that the emperor had never seen an elephant before, and he thought that the emperor would be very impressed.

The next day, Cao Cao and the other generals arrived at the palace. Each of them brought a gift for the emperor. The emperor was pleased with the gifts, but he was most impressed by Cao Cao's elephant. He had never seen an elephant before, and he was amazed by its size and strength.

The emperor thanked Cao Cao for the gift, and then he asked him how much the elephant weighed. Cao Cao did not know the answer to this question. He had never weighed an elephant before, and he did not know how to do it. He was embarrassed to admit that he did not know the answer, so he lied and said that he did. The emperor was not fooled by Cao Cao's lie. He knew that Cao Cao did not know the answer to the question, but he did not say anything. He waited to see what Cao Cao would do.

Cao Chong's Solution

Cao Cao was worried. He knew that the emperor knew that he was lying. He also knew that the emperor was waiting to see what he would do. He could not admit that he did not know the answer to the question, but he also could not lie again. He had to find a way to weigh the elephant without using a scale.

Cao Cao thought long and hard about the problem. Finally, he came up with an idea. He would use a boat and a set of rocks to weigh the elephant. He knew that the elephant would displace its own weight in water. So, if he could measure the amount of water that the elephant displaced, he would know how much the elephant weighed.

Cao Cao got a large boat and had it filled with water. Then, he had the elephant get into the boat. The water level in the boat rose, and Cao Cao marked the new water level. Then, he had the elephant get out of the boat and replaced the water that had been displaced by the elephant with rocks. He added rocks until the water level in the boat reached the same level as it had been when the elephant was in the boat.

Cao Cao now knew how much water the elephant had displaced. He also knew how much the rocks weighed. So, he could calculate the weight of the elephant by multiplying the weight of the rocks by the volume of water that the elephant had displaced.

Cao Cao was very happy with his solution. He had found a way to weigh the elephant without using a scale. He went back to the palace and told the emperor how he had done it. The emperor was very impressed by Cao Chong's intelligence and wisdom. He rewarded Cao Chong with a high-ranking position in his court.
