The Story of New York Wine: Excelsior Editions
A Rich History
The story of New York wine begins in the 17th century, when Dutch settlers planted the first grapes on the banks of the Hudson River. These early attempts at winemaking were largely unsuccessful, but in the 19th century, German and Swiss immigrants brought their expertise to the region, and the industry began to flourish.
The Finger Lakes region, with its long, narrow lakes and steep slopes, proved to be an ideal location for growing grapes. By the late 19th century, New York was one of the leading wine producers in the United States.
However, Prohibition dealt a devastating blow to the industry. Many vineyards were abandoned, and wine production plummeted. It wasn't until the 1970s that the New York wine industry began to revive.
A Thriving Present
Today, New York is once again a major wine producer, with over 400 wineries and 30,000 acres of vineyards. The Finger Lakes region remains the heart of the industry, but other regions, such as the Hudson Valley and Long Island, are also producing high-quality wines.
New York wines are known for their diversity, with everything from crisp whites to robust reds being produced. The state's winemakers are also experimenting with new grape varieties, such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir.
The New York wine industry is also a major economic driver, generating over $4 billion in annual revenue. The state's wineries attract over 1 million visitors each year, and wine tourism is a growing industry.
