Edmund Kemper was born in California in 1948. He suffered a traumatic childhood, marked by emotional and physical abuse. His father was an alcoholic and gambler, and his mother was emotionally distant. Kemper's parents divorced when he was young, and he was left in the care of his grandparents.

As a teenager, Kemper exhibited disturbing behavior, including torturing animals and setting fires. He was also withdrawn and had difficulty forming relationships. Kemper's crimes were particularly brutal. He often strangled his victims, dismembered their bodies, and kept their heads as trophies. He also committed necrophilia with their corpses.
