James Madison was one of the most important figures in American history. He was a key architect of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and he served as the nation's fourth president from 1809 to 1817.

Madison was born in Port Conway, Virginia, on March 16, 1751. He was the son of a wealthy planter, and he received a classical education at the College of William & Mary. After graduating from college, Madison studied law and entered politics.
